It should be considered that photovoltaic systems are generally located on unprotected roofs or in large photovoltaic fields, and for this reason protection is the basis for system reliability.The following aspects will be discussed:

1. Importance of PV system protection. National and international regulatory framework.
2. External protection system (lightning arresters and earthing system).
3. Internal protection system (surge suppressors).
4. Successful cases.
